Jesus Songs
Music has a definite effect on the human spirit. Scientists spend considerable time studying the effects of different genres of music on the human brain, the heart, and many other physical aspects, but the deepest part of all this is that the human spirit responds to music. Jesus songs are without doubt the kind of songs that have the best effects on the human heart. In what way is the human heart affected by songs about Jesus and songs sung to Him?
- It turns our eyes away from worthless things, and turn them to the One who is full of worth. This is why, even if you are not conscious of it, when you sing songs about Jesus, you wind up forgetting to worry about your problems. Even children who may be upset about something may find that they feel relaxed and calmer when they sing about Jesus. Hymns are a mainstay in Christian gatherings, owing to their strong emphasis on Jesus and His finished work. Interestingly, even though hymns usually seem to come with Old English-type language, kids can still enjoy them presented in a way that captures the interest of little hearts, like in the Hymns by Cedarmont Kids album, for example.
- Our hearts come alive from a touch from Him. In the Bible, there is a story of a woman who had an issue of blood for a period of twelve years. After spending all she had on doctors, she heard of Jesus, and knew she needed to get to Him, believing that if she could only touch His clothes, she would be well. That was exactly what happened: she snuck up to Him in the crowds, and when she touched His prayer shawl, her flow of blood stopped. She is a wonderful picture of how we also come alive from a mere touch from Him, and Jesus songs are those that are great avenues for His manifest presence, as they usher the worshipers into focusing on Jesus Himself.
- It gives us confidence and hope no matter what our circumstances. One difficult thing about life is that there really is no way out from the troubles that we face. But for us Christians, we can rejoice in the hope that we have in Him, and know that nothing is impossible for Him. Even little ones can be trained up with an unshakable confidence in Him, with albums like Super Strong God establishing them in His power working for them!
- As we behold Him, we become like Him. This is a crucial element in the Christian walk: we are not transformed by our sheer willpower, but instead, we get transformed into His likeness as we behold Him. This means that, if we struggle with our kids’ behavior, the only way to get them to change would be to bring them to regular encounters with Jesus Himself. We cannot change them on our own or by imposing fear-based obedience, but change will only come permanently as they see more of His beauty and His heart.
If you want to see these results on your heart as well as your kids’ heart, try getting yourself a big dose of Jesus songs on a regular basis. Chances are, your heart will feel lighter, your gaze higher, and your spirit more alive than ever before.
